Literacy Strategies to Support Intensifying Interventions

NCII provides a series of reading lessons to support special education instructors, reading interventionists, and others working with students who struggle with reading. These lessons, adapted with permission from the Florida Center for Reading Research and Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk, address key reading and prereading skills and incorporate research-based instructional principles that can help intensify and individualize reading instruction.

Behavior Intervention Tools Chart

The Behavioral Intervention Tools Chart is comprised of studies conducted on programs beyond the core procedures (e.g., school-wide, basic classroom organization and management) that target small groups or individual students with social, emotional, or behavioral problems whose performance is non-responsive to the core procedures. The chart displays the study’s results and ratings of the study’s quality, information on the program administration, and whether additional research has been conducted on the program.

Behavior Progress Monitoring Tools Chart

The Behavior Progress Monitoring Tools Chart is comprised of evidence-based progress monitoring tools that can be used to assess students’ social, emotional or behavioral performance, to quantify a student's rate of improvement or responsiveness to instruction, and to evaluate the effectiveness of instruction. The chart displays ratings on technical rigor of performance level standards (reliability and validity) and growth standards (sensitivity and decision rules) and provides information on the whether a bias analysis was conducted, and key usability features.

Behavior Screening Tools Chart

Children with severe needs related to behavior and/or social or emotional skills may benefit from intensive intervention. Universal screening may be used to identify children who require behavior intervention, including intensive intervention. The behavior screening tools chart provides ratings of a screener's ability to identify students who may need more intensive support.

Academic Intervention Tools Chart

The Academic Intervention Tools Chart is designed to assist educators and families in becoming informed consumers who can select interventions that best meet their individual needs. The Center's Technical Review Committee (TRC) on Academic Interventions independently established a set of criteria for evaluating the scientific rigor of studies demonstrating the efficacy of instructional intervention programs. The TRC rated each submitted study against these criteria but did not compare it to other studies on the chart.

The Academic Progress Monitoring Tools Chart is designed to assist educators and families in becoming informed consumers who can select academic progress monitoring tools that best meet their individual needs. The Center's Technical Review Committee (TRC) on Progress Monitoring independently established a set of criteria for evaluating the scientific rigor of progress monitoring tools. The TRC rated each submitted tool against these criteria but did not compare it to other tools on the chart.

Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Response to Intervention within Multi-Tiered System of Supports: Fidelity of Implementation Rubric

The Culturally and Linguistically Responsive (CLR)–Response to Intervention (RTI) Fidelity Rubric is used by individuals who are responsible for monitoring school-level fidelity of RTI implementation within a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS). The rubric is aligned with the essential components of RTI and the infrastructure that is necessary for successful implementation. It is accompanied by a worksheet with guiding questions and score points for use in an interview with a school’s RTI leadership team.

Effective Coaching of Teachers: Fidelity Worksheet and Rubric

Like any other educational innovation, the coaching of teachers must be used with fidelity in order to achieve its intended outcomes. Although fidelity is often thought of as adherence to the “key ingredients” of the innovation, it also includes aspects such as quality, responsiveness of the participants (e.g., coach responsiveness to teacher needs), and dose. This means that fidelity in coaching should continuously adhere to the effective practices of observation, modeling, delivery of performance feedback, and use of alliance-building strategies.

Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) Fidelity of Implementation Rubric

The MTSS Fidelity of Implementation Rubric and Summary Sheet are for use by individuals responsible for monitoring the school-level fidelity of MTSS implementation. They may also be used by schools for self-appraisal evaluation; however, they were not designed for compliance monitoring and therefore should not be used for this purpose. The rubric and the summary sheet are designed to be used together and are aligned with the essential components of MTSS.
